Questions & Answers
What is Massage Therapy? Is a process of manual manipulation (massage) of the body's muscular and soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, skin) through a variety of techniques ranging from relaxation to clinical and therapeutic applications.
What is your first appointment like? Plan to arrive a few minutes early to check in and relax. You will be asked to fill out a medical history form. This form is used to create a treatment that caters to your specific needs. Please be accurate, as Massage is not always appropriate. I will leave the room, while you undress and relax on the table. I will cover you with a sheet and blanket. Most people undress completely, though you may prefer to wear your underwear. Massage usually begins with a light touch, to calm the nervous system and release tension in your muscles. Gradually as your body becomes ready, we can work deeper to relax specific areas.
What should you do during a Massage? Make yourself comfortable. Some people close their eyes and relax completely, while others prefer to talk. It's your massage, you should do whatever feels natural. Do not hesitate to ask questions about what I am doing or about massage in general. The desire to sigh or to take a deep breath is a sign that you are relaxing.
Will Massage hurt? Massage on healthy tissue feels great! When you have an injury, poor posture or a chronic issue, massage may cause some discomfort, which usually lessens noticeably in the first few minutes. We don’t want to create more pain, so always let me know when you feel any discomfort. I like to work with a pain scale, ranging from 1 (no pain) to 10(unbearable). Ideally, we want to be no more than a 5 or 6, this is an acceptable level.
After Massage? When your massage is finished, I will leave the room while you dress. Be aware that massage is profoundly relaxing; give yourself a moment to reorientate before getting up. Most people feel relaxed and free of aches and pains that have built up for months After the initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience an increase energy that can last for several days. Sometimes the immediate effects may seem mild. Watch for further change over the following days, such as pain relief, increase mobility, or reduced stress and a great night’s sleep!
How often should I get a Massage? As I tell all my clients: you must be aware of your body after your treatment, as massage lasts longer for some people than others. Your goal will also affect how frequently you schedule massages. If your purpose is to reduce pain, then weekly visits are recommended until that pain has significantly decreased. If your goal is prevention of pain and negative effects of stress, then monthly visits are recommended to maintain health. These are just recommendations and I would be happy to discuss your individual frequency.
Is Massage Therapy covered by medical insurance? If massage therapy is required due to an accident or injury, your medical insurance may cover the costs of your treatment. For information specific to your provider, please call your insurance company.
